Major Leap in Water Conservation: 38 Countries Join Freshwater Challenge
#NewInTheHood In a landmark effort to combat climate change and preserve ecosystems, 38 countries have joined the Freshwater Challenge, an initiative aimed at restoring and protecting freshwater resources. Announced at a high-level event during COP28, this initiative builds upon the efforts of six founding countries from the UN 2023 Water Conference.
The Freshwater Challenge seeks to restore 300,000 kilometers of degraded rivers and 350 million hectares of wetlands by 2030. The coalition of countries, now including members from diverse continents, collectively oversees over 30% of the world’s renewable freshwater resources and houses nearly 2 billion people.
